Frontline Supervisor:

  • February, 2001 - Topics include: alcohol and drug abuse, disciplinary action, confronting attitude problems, maintaining control of emotional responses to employees who question authority, Problem employees:  referrals vs. termination.

  • March, 2001 - Topics include:   depression, absenteeism, referral to FSAP considered as retaliation by employee, Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA); does it apply if an employee mistakenly considers themselves disabled? Avoiding diagnostic and clinical referral of employees with personal problems.

  • April 2001 - Topics include: FSAP involvement with termination process for employees with emotional problems in the case that the employee "can't handle it", Myths and misconceptions regarding FSAP referrals, guidelines for investigation of incidents in the workplace associated with disturbing employee conduct, medical problems contributing to tardiness and quality of work - is this a reason for referral to the FSAP? No prior performance evaluations cause of concern to employees who are suddenly asked to undergo one and instead choose to resign.

  • May 2001 - Topics include:   Employee reports FSAP stated the supervisor was not acting properly.   Should an employee who has been receiving charitable assistance from religious organizations for support be referred to FSAP for counseling?  Poor documentation.   Non-verbal behaviors by supervisors viewed as intimidation by employees.   Techniques to reduce defensiveness of employees when being verbally corrected to focus on performance improvement. 

  • June 2001 - Topics include: Employee makes reference to "legal advisor" when reprimanded.  Establishing a reciprocating documentation plan to reduce performance evaluation problems.  Sleeping on the job.  Absenteeism affecting morale; termination versus FSAP referral.  Dealing with rebellious and irate employees upon outcome of performance evaluations.

  • July 2001 - Topics include:  Approved FSAP visits on University time?;  FSAP visits are voluntary --  supervisory referrals may be made on the basis of attendance, conduct and quality of work; attitude problems; ineffective corrective interviews;  FSAP's role in assisting employees on the Family Medical Leave Act.

  • August 2001 - Topics include: Why should a record of FSAP participation not be an official part of an employee's personnel documentation?; should a supervisor diagnose or refer when performance  indicates possible addiction problems?; is FSAP mediation always appropriate to resolve conflicts?; decreasing rumors and increasing morale; what result can you expect from an FSAP referral?

  • September 2001 - Topics include: How do you get information about the nature of an employee's personal problems?; your role as a supervisor when employee frightens coworkers by "blowing up"; dealing with an employee's problem behavior; tips to help get employees to take a supervisor seriously; tips to maintain credibility when your supervisor reverses your decision.

  • October 2001 - Topics include:   What should you do once you have made a supervisor referral?; FSAP's role in assisting employees; why it is important to make supervisor referrals early; FSAP can help an employee by sharing resources; use the FSAP to make personal changes -- for your own growth.

  • November 2001 - Topics include:  Referring employees who continue to be upset since the September 11 attacks; resolving the conflict in your relationship with an employee; appropriate language and documentation in performance evaluations; four steps to help improve morale; two foundation principles of referral to FSAP.

  • December 2001 - Topics include:   Suggestions to a supervisor to model good team work; referring an employee who is missing work due to an injury or health problem; communicating with the FSAP as the new supervisor of an employee already referred to the FSAP; what to do when an employee discloses a personal problem; making a "formal" referral of an employee to the FSAP.

  • January 2002 - Topics include:   Employee morale and attitude problems -- reducing negativity; praising performance; suggestions for how to handle the situation when you smell alcohol on an employee's breath at work; complusive gamblers and the workplace; who should make the referral of an employee with performance problems.

  • February 2002 - Topics include:  Suggestions on how to handle the situation when an employee complains anonymously about coworker's performance; changing supervision style; socializing with employees you supervise; referring an employee to FSAP who is going to be dismissed for performance problems;  employee's therapist thinks your style of supervision  affects employee's health.

  • March 2002 - Topics include:   What to do if an employee requests special work accommodations; when making a referral, should you advise the FSAP counselor of rumors that exist about the employee; what determines if behavior is sexual harassment; personal problems and poor attendance.
